Tata Altroz Electric Car - Interesting Facts You Must Know
Can Tata Altroz Electric be Your Daily Use Car - Range, Charging Time, Power, Price?
Tata Motors revealed the Altroz EV at the Auto Expo 2020. Based on the premium hatchback Altroz, the Altroz EV will be India’s 1st battery-powered electric premium hatchback available for the buyers who are looking for a feature-loaded car with reasonable range and affordable pricing.
It is expected to get all the bells and whistles of the current car that includes Harmann infotainment system, voice alerts, reverse parking camera, ABS with EBD and many more.Based on the ALPHA arc architecture, the Altroz excels in terms of safety by acquiring a 5-star safety rating from G-NCAP. Well, looking ahead at the battery-powered Altroz which is based on the same platform, is expected to deliver similar safety ratings.
With Tata’s Ziptron tech used in its Nexon EV, Altroz EV is also expected to have the same with a battery pack of 30 kWh.
Tata Altroz EV Exterior Design
Unveiled at the Auto Expo, the car looks similar to the regular Altroz but it does have some cosmetic changes to differentiate it from the outgoing ICE model.
The front fascia is refreshed with the mesh pattern on the front apron, the piano black grille has the ‘EV’ badge and the sharp-looking lights add more character to the overall appearance of the car.
The EV variant is expected to have a different set of dual-tone R16 alloys, reworked bumpers and some blue coloured styling elements on the running board and other body panels just like we saw on the Nexon EV.
The EV will also have a special paint option of ‘teal blue’ that is a dark shade of the colour. Other noticing bits are the black inserts on the window line and uniquely placed side indicators on the fenders.
Tata Altroz EV Interior, Features
Continuing the blue accents on the dashboard and other bits of the interior, it will have a similar plush interior design with a minimalistic approach. The car is expected to have a split centre console along with a large armrest between the seats. Additional storage spaces are given on the lower part of the dashboard due to the lack of traditional gear lever.
Rotary style knob for the gear selector would be available to set the car in motion. Automatic AC, Harmann sound system, infotainment with smartphone connectivity, Harmann sound system, ISOFIX anchors, push-button start/stop, keyless entry and other modern-day features will be seen on the production car.
Tata’s ‘Z Connect’ connected car tech with over 30 features will be there to know various parameters of your car like range, remaining charging time, locating charging stations, vehicle health report, remote commands and many more.
Tata Altroz EV Motor, Charging Time
The Altroz EV is expected to have a similar package like its elder sibling- Nexon EV. Powering the front wheels would be a 95kW motor, the battery would also remain the same at 30kWh producing similar power figures.
Being an EV, the car will have an automatic transmission with instantaneous torque and regenerative braking.
There might be a chance that Tata reduces the power of the motor but the battery will largely remain the same. Taking around an hour for charging it from 0 to 80% through fast charging, the range would also increase.
Considering the extra weight of the Nexon over the Altroz, the latter would be more agile and fast in terms of performance.
As it's the second EV from the brand, it will be better in terms of reliability and maintenance.
Tata Altroz EV Range, Daily Usability
Ticking that box, Altroz EV would work just fine with all those who are looking for a hatch for their daily commute to their offices. Intracity rides and some short trips can be expected to go well. As this vehicle is expected to have a 300+ km claimed range, you can easily get up to 260-275 km mark in the real world.
If you are someone who takes the car regularly outside your state or any long journey for that matter, keeping in mind the current infrastructure of the charging stations, EV is not the ideal option to go for.
A secured parking spot is also needed to charge your EV. If you park your vehicle on alleyways or roadside, your only source of charge would be the fast chargers at your dealerships and few charging stations depending on your locality.
Tata Altroz Vs Altroz EV Comparison
The overall design of both cars is identical. Both of them possess one of the most stylish looking designs in the premium hatchback segment. Sharing the same underpinning, ICE model comes with either a 1.2L petrol or a 1.5L diesel under the hood, whereas EV has its motor that powers the front wheels.
Another merit for the EV would be its interior space. Lacking the transmission and exhaust pipe, the EV is expected to have more room inside the car with no transmission hump that plays a spoilsport for the centre rear passenger.
With the placement of the drive selector on the armrest, the EV will lack a traditional centre console leaving more room in the centre. There are also some additional cubby spaces on the dashboard for your extra knicks and knacks.
You can get the Tata Altroz with a 1.2L petrol or a 1.5L diesel. Both of these engines provide enough performance mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Currently, the car is not available with an automatic gearbox but we can expect one soon. With a fuel tank of 37 litres, it does have a better range than the EV but you also need to pay better for fossil fuels.
Coming on to the EV, it is expected to have a 95 kW motor beneath its hood taking power from the 30kWh battery that would be placed on the floor. Such battery placement will ensure a low centre of gravity keeping the car’s dynamics in check. The handling and steering response would be mounted due to its effective engineering.
Both of these vehicles will be similar in terms of the equipment list. As the EV would be priced higher, it is expected to have some extra add ons like a larger infotainment screen and some of the features included as standard.
Tata Altroz is available in 5 variants- XE, XM, XT, XZ & XZ (O).
Whereas like the Nexon EV, Tata will also plan to launch the Altroz in XM & XZ variants only.
Comparing the price of the regular Altroz with its EV sibling-the Altroz EV, the electric Altroz will start at around Rs 10 lakhs and cost higher than the regular model
With additional electronics and ditching the regular combustion process, the EV will house battery technology resulting in the higher price tag. The running cost of Altroz EV will be much lesser than the Petrol or Diesel powered Altroz
Tata Altroz EV Pricing and Launch in India
Tata Altroz EV is expected to be priced between Rs. 10 to 13 lakh and is expected to be launched in January 2021. It will be positioned below the Nexon EV and will rival electric cars like the upcoming Mahindra Electric KUV100.
