Tata Altroz iTurbo Review – Best Hot Hatchback for 10 Lakh?
Tata Altroz iTurbo Engine Spec, Driving Performance Road Test Review – Best Hot Hatchback to Buy for 10 Lakh?
The Altroz always deserved a turbo petrol engine and ever since its launch, there have been rumours of a turbo petrol but now Tata Motors has finally addressed that. The Altroz was lagging behind its rivals because it lacked a turbo petrol as recently the demand for turbo petrols have increased. Now there is a new turbo petrol variant and also a new top-end trim being added which addresses what was missing. Here is our road test review of theAltroz iTurbo hot hatchback
Engine Specification - Altroz iTurbo
The Altroz iTurbo gets the same turbo petrol engine as the Nexon but it is slightly detuned to 108 bhp and 140Nm. The engine is a 1.2l turbo petrol three cylinder while now the Altroz iTurbo also gets a Sports mode which gives it a faster response. The gearbox though is only a 5-speed manual.
Driving Experience – Altroz iTurbo
The Altroz iTurbo feels actually more silent and has a smooth power delivery when compared to the Nexon, which also has the same engine. The 140Nm of torque arrives early in the rev band at 1500- 5500 rpm. Out in the stop-go traffic the Altroz iTurbo feels better since there is added torque hence there is less downshifts required.
You can drive it at a higher gear with no frequent gear changes hence the turbo petrol immediately makes sense as a city car. The power delivery is also not as flat as the standard 1.2l engine. But along with the low-end torque and the performance, the high speed drive-ability of the engine also impressed.
It does not feel flat and is quick with a stronger mid-range hence the iTurbo goes upto speeds like 120 km/h easily when tested on private road. The fact that the Altroz is lighter than the Nexon and lower helps in ride plus handling. The handling is also impressive while the steering is communicative. In the city it is light but not too light while the weight increases when driven at high speeds. Roll is less and it feels one of the better hatchbacks in terms of stability at high speeds and cornering ability. The ride quality is also good but one senses that the suspension has been changed and is a bit firmer which is felt when going over potholes. The gearbox though is the only weak link since the throw is long plus not smooth.
Mileage - Altroz iTurbo
The official efficiency figure of the Altroz iTurbo is 18.3 kmpl but as is with the turbo petrol cars, the actual efficiency depends on the way you drive the car hence in our overall driving tests the car gave 12-13 kmpl in the city and also along with some highway driving added.
Verdict – Altroz iTurbo
The Altroz iTurbo is very much worth the extra price over the standard Altroz with ex-showroom prices starting at 7.99 lakh (expected) due to the tuning by Tata Motors and how the turbo petrol engine has adapted to the Altroz package. This engine is one of the best that Tata has made in terms of its petrol engine. The power is smooth and works both in the slow traffic conditions as well as doing long distance highway driving. The engine has enough power hence you will not complain plus the added features is a bonus. The Altroz iTurbo is our pick and something that you should seriously consider if you want a fun and sporty car under 10 lakhs.
