Compare : Tata HBX Hornbill vs Hyundai AX1 Micro SUV
Tata HBX Hornbill vs Hyundai AX1 (Casper) Micro SUV - Detailed Comparison
The battle for SUV leadership is going on at a rapid pace and it does not matter which size too as SUVs are coming in at every shape to please buyers. With SUVs being preferred, all launches are concentrated at that end of the segment. Currently the subcompact SUV space is getting divided into various categories and while the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue occupy one end of the segment, the other end is increasingly getting crowded with smaller subcompact SUVs with small engines but having price-tags which rivals small hatchbacks. Given a choice many would get a SUV instead of a hatchback which explains the success of the Nissan Magnite and the Renault Kiger. But there are more offerings coming up in the form of the Tata HBX aka Hornbill or Timero plus the Hyundai AX1 or Casper micro SUV. Based on the latest information, Tata may launch the Tata HBX Hornbill in September,2021. Here is a quick comparison between the two.
It is interesting how both car-makers have taken a different way of designing these micro SUVs. The Hyundai is more boxy and has straight lines including a tall roof for more space. The HBX is more crossover like and would be more aggressively styled with the latest Tata design language. Do note that the HBX is closer to launch and more details about the final spec are here. The HBX in some terms is similar to the concept and has a big front while the rear is more crossover. From images the AX1 would be like a S-Presso with a tall boy look. In terms of length expect the AX1 to be shorter than the Venue at 3.8m also the HBX would be slightly longer at 3.8m plus.
Interior and Features
The HBX interior would also be similar to the concept and is completely different from any other Tata car except for some details. The steering wheel and the part digital instrument cluster is from the Altroz while the centre console has the same size touch screen. Changed is the square AC vents and the distinct empty space below that. We do not know how the AX1 interior looks but it would be similar to the Venue or Nios in some aspects. Expect a same size touch screen and part digital instruments while Hyundai will focus on interior quality a lot along with a youthful blend of colours. Space in both would be similar to hatchbacks like Tiago or Nios though headroom could be more.
The HBX would come with a 1.2l petrol at start with a 5-speed manual while an AMT would come in later. The AX1 would come with the engines of the Nios so expect the range starter to be a 1.2l petrol and it might also get a 1.0 turbo petrol though with a manual only. The 1.2l will get an AMT like the Nios.
The HBX is coming later this year in October while the AX1 will come early next year before the financial year closing. The HBX would be aggressively priced at Rs 4.5 lakh starting while the same is expected from the AX1. The top-end versions would be nearing Rs 8 lakhs.
