Volkswagen ID Electric Car India Launch Plans - ID4 SUV to compete with Kona and ZS in 2022?
Volkswagen is investing in electric mobility in a big way and its ID electric car brand is proof of that. It is a new range of electric cars and with a platform which would give many such offerings. For India the recently revealed ID4 Electric SUV could be the perfect way for Volkswagen to embrace electric mobility in India. It is a premium electric SUV based on the new modular electric platform and has a light aluminium architecture to reduce weight.
Volkswagen ID4 Electric Car Driving Range, Charging Time and Performance
The first edition of the electric SUV has a 82kWh battery along with a rear mounted motor which makes 201 bhp of power and 310Nm of torque capable of doing from 0-100kph in 8.5sec. Currently it is RWD while AWD models will follow later with an additional front-mounted 102 bhp, 140Nm electric motor. It gets both DC and AC fast charging while the range is impressive for its size as it claims around 402 km for a single charge. Expect real-world driving range between 300-350 km. VW claims the ID4 needs 38 minutes to charge from 5% to 80% using a 125-kW DC fast charger and about 7.5 hours using a standard charger at home.

The ID4 is positioned between the Tiguan and the 7-seater Tiguan Allspace and measures 4,584mm in length, 1,852mm in width, 1,640mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,771mm for a spacious interior and 543 litres of boot space.

The ID4 also has a futuristic interior where everything is controlled via touch screen or touch sensitive controls or via voice controls. It has a 5-inch digital driver display and a 10-inch central one while a 12-inch version is optional. There is gesture control, sliding controls, wireless charging, WiFi, dual-zone climate control and power close boot. The space inside is also big and comparable to a Tiguan.
Volkswagen ID4 Electric Car Price and India Launch Date
The ID4 could be a futuristic SUV and it certainly looks like it with no grille plus large LEDs while the shape is different from any other SUV. Size wise is less than the Tiguan but bigger than the T-Roc. Volkswagen can either look at CBUs which would be expensive or look at CKD which would lower the price. But the ID4 would end up being more expensive than the Kona or ZS at Rs 50 lakhs (ex-showroom) but the space, features, driving range and performance could make it an interesting car for our market. We expect Volkswagen to import a limited number of ID4 electric car in India by end of 2022 to get the market feedback before potentially launching the ID4 in India.
