Seltos vs Creta vs S-Cross vs Duster vs Harrier vs Hector
Best 5 Seater Mid-Size SUV Under Rs 20 Lakh to Buy in India
The 5-seater midsize SUV segment is one of the hottest segments in the Indian car market and also has the biggest fight in terms of new launches and updates. The Kia Seltos changed the segment dynamics and took the crown from the Creta but then the new 2020 Creta came in and again till now has been leader. But more than the Creta and Seltos, if you want more size, you can also look at the new Harrier plus the Hector of course. Now there is a new Renault Duster with a turbo petrol and a Maruti S-Cross too. So which is the best, here is a comparo.
EXTERIOR LOOKS AND DESIGN
It is no surprise that the Maruti S-Cross is amongst the shortest and has the least width while in terms of length it has the same as the Creta with being amongst the shortest. The Creta is next and is actually slightly smaller in length, width and height when compared to the Kia Seltos. The Seltos meanwhile is shorter than also the Duster and also less wider. The Duster surprisingly is longer and wider than the S-Cross, Creta and Seltos. The Harrier and Hector are of course much bigger but here the Harrier is even longer, wider than the Hector plus being the largest car here. The Creta looks futuristic with its design while the Seltos is more conventionally handsome. The Duster looks good but is getting dated now while the S-Cross too does not look like an SUV. The Harrier you can say has the most presence but the Hector also looks attractive with the big face and the headlamps plus DRL.
INTERIOR AND SPACE
In terms of wheelbase the S-Cross has the least while both the Creta and Seltos have the same. The Duster is up next while the Harrier and Hector have the longest wheelbase with the Hector being the winner. In terms of space and comfort the Hector offers the best space and the seats are spacious. The Harrier though not offering the same legroom of the Hector comes close. In terms of comfort the Harrier seats are the best followed by the Hector. The Creta has more rear comfort over the Seltos with slightly more space while the Duster is also good but surprise is the S-Cross which has a wide and comfortable rear seat.
FEATURES AND TECHNOLOGY
If you are paying this much then some basic features and equipment is what you expect and you get that. All cars have touchscreens with smartphone connectivity, rear camera with sensors, steering controls, LED DRL, powered mirrors etc. The Duster is the least equipped car here though along with the S-Cross since both do not have sunroof, rear ac vents, connected tech, wireless charging etc.
The Harrier along with the Hector plus the Creta and Seltos are the leaders here and have all of the above plus more. Harrier despite having a small touchscreen and lack of connected tech has the best audio system along with a massive panoramic sunroof, terrain response mode and powered driver seat etc But move to the Seltos and you have more features. Connected car tech, wireless charging, air purifier, Bose audio, heads up display, ventilated seats etc The Creta goes one up with paddle shifters on the DCT, rear cushions, panoramic sunroof (Seltos has a regular one) etc above what the Seltos offers. The Hector misses out on the ventilated seats and the purifier plus wireless charging but gets you the biggest touchscreen, powered front dual seats, powered tailgate, 360 degree camera and ambient lighting etc.
In terms of touchscreen the Creta and Seltos both have big ones but also the best in terms of display and touch sensitivity. The Hector is next with the Maruti, Tata and Renault in that order.
ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE
All SUVs here provide performance with proper automatic gearboxes while manual is of course standard. As usual the Creta and Seltos offer you the most. The Duster offers one of the most powerful petrols in form of its 1.3 turbo unit which makes 156 bhp. Standard is the 106 bhp 1.5l. The S-Cross like the Duster does not get a diesel but also unlike the Duster the S-Cross only gets a 1.5l petrol with 105 bhp. The Harrier gets only a 2.0 diesel and no petrol but makes a huge amount of power at 170 bhp. The Hector offers you also a 170 bhp diesel which is a 2.0 while there is a 1.5l petrol turbo with 143 bhp. The Creta and Seltos both offer 1.5l petrol and diesel units with 115 bhp and 140 bhp. The Hector petrol manual and the S-Cross have a mild hybrid also.
In terms of gearbox options the Creta and Seltos again offer you the most where both offer a 7-speed DCT on the turbo, a torque converter on the diesel and a CVT. The Hector offers a DCT with its petrol while the diesel is manual only. The Harrier offers a diesel automatic and manual with the diesel being a torque converter. The S-Cross offers a 4-speed automatic and a manual with its petrol engine. The Duster also offers a CVT option with its turbo petrol.
The Hyundai Creta is amongst the most fuel efficient with the DCT petrol giving 17 kmpl and the diesel giving 21 kmpl. The S-Cross though has the more fuel efficient petrol at 18.5 kmpl for the petrol manual and 18.4 for the auto, in diesel the Creta rules though. The Seltos is slightly behind than the Creta in petrol at 16.5 kmpl while the diesel is at 21 kmpl. The Duster base petrol manual is 14.9 but the turbo petrol is actually same as the Seltos at 16.5 kmpl.
The heavier Harrier and Hector being heavy and big SUVs obviously drink more. The Hector petrol auto drinks the most at an efficiency at 13.9 kmpl while hybrid petrol manual does 15.8 kmpl. The diesel is more efficient though at 17.4 kmpl. The Harrier auto gives 14.6 kmpl while the manual is 16.3 kmpl.
S-Cross is the most affordable car here with prices starting at Rs 8.4 lakh and going all the way to Rs 10.8 lakh. The Duster is the next with a price starting at Rs 8.6 lakh and going till Rs 10.5 lakh. The Creta starts at Rs 9.99 lakh and going till Rs 17.2 lakh. The Seltos is slightly less at the starting at Rs 9.8 lakh and going till Rs 17.5 lakh. The Harrier is between Rs 13.8 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. The Hector is cheaper meaning the Harrier is the most expensive car here. The Hector is between Rs 12.8 lakh and going till Rs 18.09 lakh.
Buy the S-Cross if you want an affordable and spacious crossover with Maruti sales reach. However it offers little beyond that lacking in features or engine options or even in looks. The Duster still looks good and the turbo petrol is fast however it is getting old now but as a rugged and fast SUV the Duster still makes sense.
The Creta and Seltos are the best selling SUVs which you can see why. Both offer looks, features and engines plus performance without sacrificing efficiency. Both offer the most value here also. The Creta is more comfortable while the Seltos is sportier. But both can be the best and answer to all your problems. But if you want size and space then the Hector is the one to have being also good value while the Harrier is the one to have if you want a rugged full size SUV. Thus choose according to your budget and you have one SUV to suit your needs.
