Compact MUV vs Mid-Size MUV Comparison - Whats the Better Buy?
The MUV segment in the Indian market has been dominated mostly by the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta. The Ertiga enjoys its fair bit of share by being the most affordable car in the segment. Recently there has been some activity in the Compact MPV segment with the launch of the Renault Triber and the updated version of the Datsun Go+. Hence we at MyNewCar.in have brought to you a detailed MUV comparison between the Datsun Go+, Renault Triber and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
Dimensions
Datsun Go+ | Renault Triber | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Length | 3995 mm | 3990 mm | 4395 mm |
Width | 1636 mm | 1739 mm | 1735 mm |
Height | 1507 mm | 1643 mm | 1690 mm |
Wheelbase | 2450 mm | 2636 mm | 2740 mm |
Ground Clearance | 180mm | 182 mm | 180 mm |
Overall the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is longer and taller and it has the longest wheelbase when compared with the Triber the Go+. But the Triber has the highest ground clearance of 182mm and is also the widest of all with the Ertiga being very close to it. The Datsun Go+, on the other hand, has a ground clearance of 180mm which is also seen on the Ertiga. In addition to this, the Go+ is also longer by 5mm when compared to the Triber.
Interior and Space
All the MPV’s in the competition are offered with 7-seat configuration. When it comes to the third row, the Ertiga as being the longest car offers better legroom and doesn’t feel much cramped. On the other hand, the third row for the Go+ is suitable to accommodate kids and it gets really cramped up for adults. Whereas the third row for the Triber is a bit roomier when compared to the Go+, it can accommodate adults well but it would get uncomfortable for them during long rides. The Ertiga comes with the best in class cabin loaded with modern design elements and premium fit and finish. When compared to its predecessor, the cabin is now more spacious and it comes loaded with updated creature comfort features and modern technology. The Datsun Go+ comes with a dual-tone interior scheme, unlike the Go hatchback which gets an all-black interior on which it is based. The cabin looks neat and but the steering wheel does look simple and it misses out on modern elements such as steering mounted controls when compared to the competition. On the other hand, the Triber also gets a dual-tone finish but the design elements and finishing is modern than the Go+. Overall when it comes to space and comfort, the Ertiga is clear winner as it comes with a spacious cabin with comfortable seating in all the three rows.
Comfort Features
The top variants of all three cars are loaded with common features such as a touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, voice commands, electrically adjustable ORVM’s and parking sensors. In addition to this, the Triber gets steering mounted controls, cooled glovebox, AC vents in all the three rows and keyless entry and start. Leading the pack is the Ertiga with additional creature comfort features such as Automatic Climate Control and roof-mounted AC vents
Safety Features
Standard safety features in all the three cars include front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder system and speed alert system. The top variants of the Go+ only get Brake Assist as an additional safety feature, but the top-spec Ertiga comes loaded with additional features such as ESP (Electronic Stability Control) and Hill Hold Control and Brake Assist. Whereas the Triber is the only car in the competition to come equipped with 4 airbags on the top variants.
Engine & Transmission
Datsun Go+ | Renault Triber | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Engine | 1.2-litre | 1.0-litre | 1.5-litre K15B Smart Hybrid / K15B (CNG) |
Power | 67 bhp / 76 bhp | 71 bhp | 103 bhp / 91 bhp |
Torque | 104 Nm / 104 Nm | 96 Nm | 138 Nm / 122 Nm |
Transmission | 5-speed Manual / CVT | 5-speed Manual / 5-speed AMT | 5-speed Manual / 4-speed Torque Converter / 5-speed Manual |
ARAI Mileage | 19.02 kmpl / 18.57 kmpl | 19 kmpl / 19 kmpl | 19.01 kmpl / 17.99 kmpl / 26.2 km per kg |
With the BS6 emission norms coming into place, the diesel engine has been discontinued for the Ertiga. Hence all of the MUV’s in the competition are now only available with petrol engine options. With the Ertiga being powered with the largest cubic capacity motor, it is the most powerful and it is the only car to come fitted with a factory-fitted CNG kit and a mild hybrid system. Renault offers the Triber with the smallest engine of all, but when compared to the Go+ (manual) it produces more power. The Go+, on the other hand, is the only car in the competition to get a CVT automatic gearbox and this version produces more power and torque than the AMT version of the Triber.
Driving
When it comes to mileage, the manual version of all the three cars gives out similar 19 kmpl figures. In the automatic model, the AMT version of the Triber is the clear winner as it offers 19 kmpl. Only the Ertiga-CNG surpasses everyone in the competition, as it offers a mileage of 26.2 km per kg. With a higher capacity engine, the Ertiga offers a smooth ride and also provides adequate power when compared to the competition. Although due to its low-end torque it does feel a bit sluggish while overtaking on highways. The Triber, on the other hand, has the smallest engine but it is one of the most refined motors. However, it lags the punch on ghats with a full load or when all the three rows are occupied. Although Datsun offers the Go+ with a 1.2-litre engine, it isn’t as peppy as the others in the competition. The sweet spot for this motor is in the mid-range making the drivability good for city use.
Price
Datsun Go+ | Renault Triber | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Ex-Showroom, India | Rs 4.29 lakh - Rs 6.99 lakh | Rs 4.99 lakh - Rs 7.22 lakh | Rs 7.59 lakh - Rs 10.13 lakh |
Warranty | 2 Years / Unlimited Km’s | 2 Years / 50000 Km | 2 Years / 40000 Km |
In the MUV segment, Datsun offers the cheapest offering with the Go+ along with a decent amount of features. Slightly above it is the Renault Triber, but it doesn’t come equipped with additional modern technology and features, which gives a tough competition to its rivals. On the other hand, the most expensive car is the Ertiga with its entry-level variants priced slightly higher than the top variants of its rivals.
Running Cost
The running cost for the Datsun Go+ for a period of 5 years comes up to Rs 16,995. Whereas, the running cost of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga for 5 years comes up to Rs 19,745. On the other hand, the running cost for the Reanult Triber for a period of 5 years is around Rs 10,170. Hence the Triber is the clear winner when it comes to maintenance and running cost. Also with heavy localisation in the production of this compact MUV, the cost of spare parts is also low.
Verdict
Although being a compact MUV the Renault Triber does give a tough competition to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It comes equipped with good features and adequate space and value for money in its segment. The Go+ although being the cheapest in the competition does miss out on creature comfort features, but it gets a smooth CVT gearbox which is beneficial in city traffic. Ertiga being a mid-size MUV offers better space and creature comfort features, but it does come with a cost which is on the higher side when compared to the competition. The engine gets the option for a factory-fitted CNG kit and a mild hybrid system, thus offering high fuel economy.
