Recently, Mahindra took the Indian Automotive sector by a storm with the launch of the latest generation Thar. With this, there has been a lot of buzz in the SUV segment and even amongst the off-road enthusiasts. In addition to New Thar, Mahindra also retails Scorpio and Bolero which have also been updated with the BS6 upgrades. New Thar vs Bolero vs Scorpio Dimensions and Design
When it comes to dimensions, the Scorpio leads the pack as it is the longest (4456mm) and tallest (1995mm) of all. On the other hand, both the New Thar and Scorpio have a similar width of 1820mm whereas the Bolero has the shortest width of 1745mm.In addition to this, the Bolero shares a similar wheelbase of 2680mm with the Scorpio which is higher than the 2020 Thar. Although the New Thar has the shortest length and wheelbase, when it comes to ground clearance it leads the pack which helps to tackle rough terrains efficiently.
Mahindra first launched the Bolero back in 2000 and it still sells it in strong numbers. With the BS6 model launched, Mahindra has now offered this SUV with an updated front fascia. This new facelift brings in a newly designed front grille, a redesigned front bumper and an updated headlamp unit. Overall it comes with a very simple and practical design, but it does stay up to date with the need of the hour.
Since its first launch back in 2002, Mahindra has offered many styling and design updates to the Scorpio. With the BS6 model launched it carries over the same robust boxy design. It comes with a 7-slot front grille and hood scoop which gives it that muscular look. In addition to this, it also comes equipped with large projector headlamps, LED guide lights, red lens LED tail lamps and it also runs of 17-inch alloy wheels.
Coming to the New Thar, it has been offered with a completely new design. It now looks very modern and it does resemble and takes inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler. For the first time, Mahindra is offering the New Thar with a factory-fitted Hard Top and it continues to be also offered with a Soft Top option as well. Although the overall design of the New Thar has completely changed when compared to its predecessor, it continues to offer that raw and robust feel. Stepping inside the cabin of the Bolero, we see that the same dashboard from the BS4 model has been carried forward. It continues to offer fabric seats, a bench-type seat in the middle and two jump seats at the rear. Overall the cabin is very simple and it serves the basic needs of an SUV. In terms of features, it is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, power windows, keyless entry, a digital instrument cluster that reads out the distance travelled, distance to empty, gear indicator and a digital clock with day and date.
Coming to the Scorpio, the overall design is very much similar to the previous model. It gets white highlights all over giving it a much more premium feel. The dashboard is upright and tall and the cabin is spacious. The middle row consists of a bench-type seat which also gets a centre armrest and at the rear, you get two jump seats. In terms of features and technology, Mahindra now offers the BS6 Scorpio with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, electrically operated ORVM's, steering mounted audio controls, cruise control and a mild hybrid system.
With the latest generation Thar launched, Mahindra has also updated the cabin along with design and mechanical upgrades. For the first time, it comes with the option of a front-facing rear seat along with the option for a side facing seats as seen in the previous model. The ergonomics have been changed, the cabin is also roomier and it gets a completely new designed dashboard which brings back the circular air-con vents and the grab handlebar. In terms of features and modern technology, the New Thar has been completely revamped. It now gets power windows, a touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering mounted audio control, roof-mounted speakers, automatic climate control and a digital driver's display.

When it comes to a petrol engine, the New Mahindra Thar is the only SUV in this competition to get one. Mahindra powers the New Thar with a 2.0L I4 mStallion 150 TGDi turbocharged petrol engine. This petrol engine produces 150 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque and it comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. In addition to this, the New Thar also gets a 4-wheel drive system as well.

The diesel engine is where we see all the competitors participating in the competition. Mahindra powers New Thar and the Scorpio with the 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine, whereas the Bolero a smaller 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine under its hood. When it comes to performance and power figures the Scorpio leads the pack as it generates 140 bhp of power and 320 Nm of twist and it also gets a mild-hybrid system.
Just behind the Scorpio is the New Thar whereas the Bolero being powered with a smaller cubic capacity engine that offers low power figures. Coming to gearbox options, the New Thar is the only SUV in the competition to be offered with an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox along with its 6-speed manual transmission. Whereas the Bolero and the Scorpio are only offered with a five-speed manual and six-speed manual gearbox respectively.
On the other hand, Mahindra offers the New Thar with the 4WD system, whereas the Bolero and the Scorpio gets an RWD system. With the BS6 updates both the Scorpio and the Bolero no.longer the 4WD setup. Mahindra offers the Thar with an independent front suspension and multilink rear suspension, mechanically locking rear differential, shift-on-the-fly low range transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L options.

With new safety norms coming into place all of the three SUV's now come equipped with standard safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder system for the front passenger and driver and speed alert system. The Scorpio gets an additional rear parking camera with the dynamic assist and cruise control on the top trim levels. Whereas the Bolero complies with the pedestrian protection norms even after being offered with a metal front bumper. But leading the competition is the New Thar as it now comes loaded with the best safety equipment such as Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Programme, rollover mitigation, hill assist, cruise control and even a roll cage.
