2020 Mahindra Thar - Old vs New Compared
This year on the 74th Independence Day, Mahindra took the wraps off the much-awaited 2020 Thar. Mahindra has completely revamped the new Thar inside and out, along with mechanical and features upgrade. For the first time, this SUV is being equipped with a choice of petrol and diesel engines along with an automatic gearbox as an option. In addition to this, the new Thar also gets a convertible roof and removable body panel thus making it altogether much more versatile for daily use and hitting those fun off-road trails. Hence, we at MyNewCar get to you a detailed comparison between the New Thar and the Old Thar to know how they differ from each other.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Exterior
NEW THAR
OLD THAR
Just like the previous-gen model, the 2020 Thar retains the boxy silhouette, its classic design and round halogen headlamp setup, along with many design and styling updates. Upfront it gets a newly designed six-slat grille, LED DRL’s, a new front bumper and raised fenders. Moving to the side profile, the Thar continues to offer the two-door cabin with an option for factory fitted hardtop and soft-top options. The hardtop panels can be removable and the soft-top version gets two options - fixed and manually convertible. At the rear, it retains the signature spare wheel mounted at the tailgate along with a split tailgate setup and the tail lamps get a new design along with LED treatment.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Interior
The cabin of the old Thar offered the raw and robust feel and it came equipped with the basic features. Interiors of the old Thar had exposed sheet metal all over, it only came with the soft-top option and it got a side-facing bench at the rear. It missed out on power windows, the dashboard was very simple in design and it was inspired by the first-gen Mahindra Bolero GLX.
Coming to the new-gen Thar, there are many changes and upgrades done to the cabin. Mahindra has designed the cabin in such a way that will not only cater the off-road enthusiasts but it will also offer better ride quality and comfort for daily commutes. The dashboard is newly designed which holds a touchscreen infotainment unit, the air-con vents get faux carbon fibre finish around, toggle switches, grab rails and a classy plaque that denotes the chassis number. Mahindra now offers front-facing seats at the rear with the top LX trim with enough legroom and knee room, which will be suitable to accommodate only two passengers comfortably. ‘Thar’ engraving can be seen all over the cabin and it gets washable floor rubber as well.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Features
When it came to creature comfort features, the previous generation Thar hardly had any modern equipment’s and it came with some basic features, which added to its robust look. These features included a double din music system, analogue speedometer and tachometer, a small digital display to the instrument cluster and an AC system.
On the other hand, with the new-gen Thar, Mahindra has built to attract conventional SUV buyers thus equipping it with modern features and technology. The equipment list includes 7-inch touchscreen infotainment that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it also features a first in class Adventure Statistics Display, roof-mounted speakers, steering mounted controls, a semi-digital instrument cluster and a TFT MID unit Display. Creature comfort features include cruise control, key-less entry, power windows and a manual HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) system.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Powertrain
Before Mahindra only powered the old Thar with a 2.5-litre CRDe turbocharged diesel engine that churned out 105 bhp of power and 247 Nm of torque. This oil burner was coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission and it was equipped with a 4WD system.
Now, for the first time, Mahindra is offering both petrol and diesel engine options along with an optional automatic gearbox. The petrol model is powered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit that puts out 150 bhp of power and 320 Nm of twist. On the other hand, the diesel model ditches the previous oil burner and now comes powered with a new 2.2-litre diesel unit that generates 130 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. Both the models get the 4WD system and both the engines come mated to a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission as an option.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Off-Road Capabilities
Previously, Mahindra used to provide the Thar with an optional 4x4 drivetrain, mechanical locking differential and a leaf-spring suspension setup at the rear. With the new generation Thar, Mahindra now gets in ESP with the mechanical locking differential, electro-mechanical driveline disconnect for the front axle, ground clearance of 226mm, improved approach angle of 42 degrees, departure angle of 37 degree and ramp-over angle of 27 degrees. Just like the previous model, the new Thar also gets a mechanical 4x4 transfer case with four-wheel low, four-wheel high and two-wheel drive modes.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Safety Features
One of the major reasons for the Old Thar to be discontinued was because of the safety features. They didn’t comply with the mandatory safety norms that came into place. With the new model, Mahindra has equipped it with standard safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and seat belt reminder system for both the front passenger and driver. In addition to this, Mahindra also equips the new Thar with hill hold control, hill descent control, ESP with rollover mitigation and a roll cage.
Mahindra Thar Old vs New - Price
As of now, the prices for the 2020 Thar haven’t been revealed yet. Mahindra will be launching the new Thar on the 2nd of October 2020. We expect the new Thar to be Rs 2 lakh more expensive over the old Thar with a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 12 lakh.
It will be competing with the New Gurkha by Force Motors which is also scheduled to be launched soon.
