Mahindra launched the second generation, Thar launched in October 2020 and it has been loved by the masses. For the first time, the SUV has been offered with a petrol engine, the automatic gearbox on the petrol and diesel engine, an option for front-facing seats, power windows, factory fitted hardtop, a touchscreen infotainment unit, and many creature comfort features. Along with this, Mahindra is also working on a 5 door version of the SUV. With the current 3 door version, accessing the second row gets difficult, with the 5 door version it will help to overcome this problem and it will help the Indian manufacturer to target buyers who are looking to buy the Thar as a daily driver. As of now the details on the 5 door Mahindra Thar is scarce but it is expected that the SUV will have a longer wheelbase. Mahindra powers the 3 door petrol version of the Thar with the 2.0-litre turbo engine whereas the diesel variants will get the 2.2-litre mHawk unit. Jeep Compass Facelift

At the Guangzhou Auto Show that was held this year, Jeep unveiled the Compass facelift. Jeep will be offering the Compass facelift with new updates on the exterior design and it will also be updated with new features as compared to the outgoing model. Jeep will launch the Compass facelift on 7th January 2021 and some dealerships have started with the unofficial bookings with a token amount of Rs 51,000. The Compass facelift will be powered with the same 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 2.0-litre diesel engine. In addition to this, the gearbox options will also be the same, the six-speed manual transmission will be standard whereas the 7-speed DCT will be matted to the petrol engine and the diesel unit will get the option for the 9-speed torque converter. The Trailhawk edition will get the 4x4 configuration on the diesel motor and it will get Jeep’s SelecTerrain AWD system.

2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe

Jeep is gearing up to launch the Wrangler 4xe which will first go on sale in the US, Chinese and European market in the first half of 2021. As of now, there is no official confirmation on its launch in the Indian market but we could expect a handful of models to be brought to the nation via the CBU route. Jeep is offering the Wrangler 4xe with blue highlights on the front bumper, wheels, and 4xe and Trail rated badging all over. In addition to this, it will also get the ‘Rubicon’ graphics on the hood whereas the overall design remains the same. Under the hood will be a 2.0-litre petrol engine which will be paired with twin electric motors. This new plug-in hybrid powertrain will generate 375 bhp of power and 637 Nm of torque and it will be paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox only. Jeep will be offering a 17kWh battery pack which will be placed under the second row and it will help the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe to drive in pure electric mode up to 40km. It will be offered with three driving modes such as - pure electric, a mixture of combustion and electric, and an e-Save mode. The overall plug-in hybrid system will offer a fuel economy of 21.26 km on a litre of petrol.

One of the most awaited cars to be launched from Maruti Suzuki in the Indian market is the Jimny. Although this SUV is available in the international market it still hasn’t been launched in the nation. At the 2020 Auto Expo Maruti Suzuki showcased the Jimny and it has also been spotted conducting test runs in India for exports. Before the successful launch of 3 door Mahindra Thar, Maruti Suzuki had planned on launching the Jimny with the five-door version in India. But Maruti Suzuki may just change their decision and launch the 3 door Jimny in Q2/2021 before the launch of 5 door Jimny (may be called Gypsy) in 2022-23. Suzuki will be manufacturing the three-door model alongside the five-door version in India. When Maruti Suzuki launches the Jimny for the Indian market it will most probably be powered with the 1.5 litre K15B petrol engine that is seen under the hood of the Vitara Brezza. This petrol engine can produce 103 bhp of power and 138 Nm of twist and it may miss out on the mild hybrid system. The motor will be coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox and an optional 4-speed torque converter and it will also get a 4 wheel drive system with a low-range transfer gear.

In July 2020. MG Motors launched the Hector Plus in the Indian market and it has been doing well in terms of sales. With this, now MG Hector plans to add a new trim level to the Hector Plus line up which will be offered with a 4X4 / 4 wheel drive system. In addition to this, MG Motors will also get in Advanced Driver Assistance System, and together they will be seen on the ‘Savvy’ trim level. This new top variant will sit above the ‘Sharp’ variant which is now the top-spec model of the Hector Plus. MG Motors will be offering the Savvy variant with both the petrol and diesel engines, hence both the engine options will be offered with a 4 wheel drive system. The petrol model is powered with a 1.5-litre turbo unit that churns out 143 bhp of power and 240 Nm of torque and it also gets the option for a 48V mild-hybrid system. On the other hand, the diesel model is powered with a 2.0-litre unit that produces 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque.

Force Motors has been working on the BS6 version of the Gurkha and it is expected to be launched somewhere around the first half of 2021. At the recently held 2020 Auto Expo, Force Motors showcased the production version of the BS6 Gurkha. This model has been spotted multiple times testing in the nation. In terms of the design, the Gurkha takes a lot of inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon with its squarish body design, round headlamps, hood-mounted LED indicators and the spare wheel mounted in the tailgate. The cabin also features many updates with the new design dashboard unit, touchscreen infotainment unit, power windows, leather upholstery, and front-facing rear seats. Powering the upcoming Force Gurkha will be the BS6 version of the 2.6-litre diesel engine sourced from Mercedes-Benz and it will produce 89 bhp of power and 260 Nm of torque. This diesel engine will be coupled to a 5-speed manual unit and it will be offered with a 4X4 system as standard. It is expected that Force Motors will also offer an off-road kit with a wide range of accessories as well.

All-New Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra is working on launching the all-new Scorpio which is expected to launch somewhere around April 2021. This upcoming SUV has been spotted testing multiple times but the models spied testing miss out on production-ready bits such as the headlight and taillight units. The upcoming New Scorpio will retain its boxy profile and it will be getting updated interiors such as a large touchscreen infotainment unit, driving modes, a new instrument cluster along with modern features and technology. Under the hood will most likely be a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that produces 140 bhp of power and it could also get the option for a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol unit that produces 190 bhp of power. As the BS6 emission norms came into place, Tata Motors discontinued the Hexa from its line up. But the Indian automotive manufacturer showcased the BS6 version of the Hexa at the 2020 Auto Expo with the Safari Edition that got the camouflage green colour. Recently, this model was spotted conducting test runs with a 4X4 badging on it. The overall design and styling will remain the same but the major updates will be under the hood. It is expected that Tata Motors will be powering the BS6 Hexa with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel unit that puts out 154 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. This oil burner will be matted to two gearbox options - 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic and it will also get the option for a 4X4 drivetrain.

Isuzu Motors was going to launch the BS6 V-Cross in the nation this year but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the launch has been delayed. It is expected that Isuzu will be launching the BS6 V-Cross in the first half of 2021 and the teasers have been released on the official website. The new generation model has been launched in the international market but there is no confirmation for the Indian market but we could expect it to be launched next year. Along with design updates on the exterior, the cabin will also be upgraded with the latest features and modern technology as compared to the ongoing model. In the international market, the new-gen Isuzu D-Max V-Cross is powered with a new 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that puts out 188 bhp of power and 450 Nm of torque. This oil burner is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox and it also comes with a switchable 4X4 4 wheel drive system. As of now, there is no confirmation if this engine will make its way to the Indian market, but we can also expect the 1.9-litre diesel unit upgraded to meet the BS6 emission norms along with the 4 wheel drive system.

Ford plans to launch the Ranger Raptor and it will be imported via the CBU route. The Raptor series in Ford’s line up is used for the most off-road-capable pickup trucks, for example, the F-150 Raptor. The Ranger Raptor by Ford is the smaller version of the F-150 which comes with similar performance parts such as the Fox coil-over suspensions on all four wheels. The Ford Ranger Raptor which is sold in the international market is powered with a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel unit. This oil burner can churn out 210 bhp of power and 500 Nm of torque and it comes coupled with a 10-speed automatic gearbox that gets paddle shifters as well. Ford offers Ranger Raptor with a 4 wheel drive system that gets six modes from its Terrain Management System.
