Keep Your Car Neat and Clean Amidst CORONA VIRUS OUTBREAK
The recent outbreak of coronavirus has made people realize how unhealthy their car is, with a huge number of microorganisms lurking around on various parts of the car. Among the personal cars, taxis and rental cars, the rental cars appear to be the dirtiest as it brings together a lot of people, who share a common atmosphere of the car. Cars can be called as our moving homes as we spend a number of hours travelling to our places of commute. This makes it very essential to keep our cars neat and clean to avoid unwanted microorganisms to take shelter in our cars.
Keeping this in mind, car manufacturers are working on various technologies to render the interiors of a car microbial inert.
Various such techniques are:
· HIGH EFFICIENCY PARTICULATE AIR FILTRATION (HEPA)
It can remove very small particles from the air, smaller than even 0.3 microns thus helping us defeat many microorganisms. It rests on the console cup holder and uses the car's 12V outlet. It filters out the particles and negatively ionizes the air for a clean scent. It processes approximately 8 cubic meters of air per hour. This efficiency provides ultimate protection in trapping allergens, dust and other particulates that can enter the car and provide the best quality breathable air. This filter is a hundred times more efficient than the standard automotive filters. However, these filters are still not proved to protect us from the CORONAVIRUS as it tends to be smaller than 0.3 microns in size.
· ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT
These days the car makers are incorporating in-car technology that uses UV rays in the car ventilation system that can kill the germs. This technology is already utilized in many hospitals around the world. This technology (UV-C) is also used in hospital ambulances. The UV-C technology makes use of UV light in the range of 200-220 nm wavelength to sterilize surfaces and air by neutralizing bacteria as well as other pathogens. This technology can be applied to various spaces in the car prone to get occupied by pathogens such as air vents, ducts, etc. This technology will not help to minimize or even eliminate the chances of catching common cold and flu. Studies have also revealed that this technology can reduce the transmission of drug resistant superbugs by up to 30 percent.
WHAT TO DO IN THE CURRENT SITUATION?
At first, we should avoid getting out of our houses and if it's extremely necessary to go out then in that case, while the above mentioned antigerm technology is evolving, we can use certain sprays that are specifically formulated for disinfecting car interiors. Many varieties are available in the market that claim to be effective against influenza virus, corona virus and others. Wipe out all the commonly touched part such as the steering wheel, exterior and interior door handles, infotainment buttons, climate control buttons, gear shifter and all other holding spaces such as cup and bottle holders as well as car keys. Make use of a microfiber cloth to clean the touch screens and dashboard. Also, vacuumize your car regularly to keep away all the dust from the AC vents, floor mats, ABC paddles and the boot.
NECESSARY ITEMS TO BE KEPT IN CAR
Hand Sanitizer: Keep a bottle of alcohol (ethyl alcohol) based sanitizer that is effective in killing microorganisms. You can apply it time and again so as to maintain hygiene.
Tissue Box: Always keep a tissue box on the co passenger side of the dashboard.
Disinfectant Spray: keep a bottle of disinfectant spray to be sprayed inside the car on time to time basis. You can use a liquid soap solution that is effective in killing off bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. You can also use bleach but make sure to dilute it with water else it might discolor the car interiors.
Trash Bin: keep a small trash bin in your car to take in all the used tissues, food remains, etc. so that they don’t get piled up in the car, thus maintaining the hygiene.
