Checklist for Driving Car After Coronavirus Lockdown Period
How to safely drive your car after a long gap of COVID19?
After a phase of heavy lockdown, in which travel was mainly restricted, citizens of the country only could only travel in case of emergency with the help of an e-pass. As we move on to the Unlock 4.0, many of these travel restrictions have now eased. With this, no restrictions are imposed on interstate travel as well. In addition to this, e-pass or any other separate permission isn’t compulsory for such movements. Many of the workplaces have now resumed operations with limited staff and with this, people mostly plan to take their own vehicles for daily commutes. Hence, we at MyNewCar get to you a complete checklist of crucial things to keep in mind before getting back on the road.
As cars haven’t been used for a long time, they may have trouble starting up as it gets discharged. Instead of repeatedly cranking the engine, jump-start the car with the help of cables if you have them handy or get the mechanic to get it done. It is recommended to visit the battery service shop to get the battery checked as well.
With the cars being parked at one place for a long time, the tyre pressure will likely be lost. Driving a car with insufficient tyre pressure is dangerous and could prove fatal. Hence, it is recommended to check the tyre pressure with the help of a gauge and also fill the air with a portable electric air pump if you have them handy at home. If no, you can drive slowly to the nearest petrol pump or a tyre shop to get the tyres checked as well.
Fluid levels - Engine Oil, Coolant, Brake Fuel and Power Steering Fluid
Before cranking up the engine, it is necessary to check whether all the fluids in the car are in their adequate quantity. This will alert you if there has been any kind of leaks and can save the car from any kind of damages and any unforeseen circumstances. Engine oil levels can be checked with the help of the dipstick placed near the engine bay. Brake fluid and power steering fluid can be checked at their containers placed at the top left-hand side of the firewall. Carefully open the radiator cap and check if there is any change in colour of the coolant. Also, check the coolant book, if the coolant level is above the minimum mark. Last but not the least top up water for the windshield sprayer as well.
Check All Electrical
While starting the car, look out for any warnings that is being displayed on the dashboard. If there are any warnings displayed, please get in touch with the service station or your local mechanic to get the issue resolved. Check all the electrical, which include the headlight upper, dipper and pass, turn signals, reverse light, brake lights, interior lights, power windows, infotainment system or music system and electrically powered seats and ORVM’s if they are functioning properly.
Check vehicle documents and Renew Insurance Policy if expired
Before heading out on the road, check all the documents if they are in place. Have a look at the expiry date on your car’s Insurance policy and the PUC certificate as well. If these copies have been expired, please get the insurance policy renewed immediately and get a fresh test for the PUC certificate.
Get Vehicle serviced
As the cars have been standing idle for a long time, it is recommended to get the car serviced as the dealership or at any service station of your choice. As the mechanic’s service the car thoroughly it will ensure you smooth and car-free drive. If your service is due, do not neglect it and get the appointment fixed for your car service immediately.
